LEDs (light emitting diodes) are small semiconductor devices which produce light as a result of the flow of electrical current through them. LED light sources are directional in nature. Hence, the light produced by LED work lights can be efficiently channeled to light up any section of a workplace, including dark and occluded areas. In LED lights, the heat produced is handled differently from other light sources. Since LEDs don’t radiate heat, the heat produced from the energy passing into the device is drawn from the LEDs using a heat sink. The heat sink absorbs heat and passes it into the immediate environment. Thus the LEDs are preserved from burning out.
The type of heat sink used by LED lights varies from one product to another. But products that have attained ENERGY STAR status are usually more reliable. These products have been thoroughly tested to ascertain that they manage heat effectively throughout the lifetime of the product.
Features of LED Work Lights
Portability: These lights are portable and adjustable. The lights usually have a pivot on which the light bulbs can be elevated or rotated to provide multi-dimensional movement that will aid illumination.
Adjustment of Illumination: LED lights used for workplace illumination can be adjusted to increase or decrease the intensity of the light. This is very vital because as people get older, the ability of their eyes to absorb light tends to diminish.
Source of Power: Most high grade work lights are operated on a battery power. They are shipped with an included battery cartridge. But they can also be powered by rechargeable batteries or 4D batteries.
Beam Distance: The beam distance refers to how far away the work light can be placed to still provide enough illumination. The beam distance of a particular work light will determine the kind of applications for which it can be used. For instance, work lights used on tractors or trucks need to have a much longer beam distance than those used in a small studio or workshop.
Water Resistance: Reliable LED work lights have very durable lenses. They are water resistant (although some cannot be used underwater). Some are made of polycarbonate materials that withstand heavy impact without breaking. This makes them ideal for use with vehicles that are parked outside in the rain or snow.
Lumens: This is a measure of the intensity of light produced by the work lights. For illumination within a small work area, work lights that provide light in hundreds of lumen may be sufficient. But work lights that produce light with intensity measured in thousands of lumen will be better for outdoor work.
Applications of LED Work Lights
LED work lights have diverse applications ranging from simple workshop or studio use to heavy outdoor use. For instance, a number of photographers and cameramen now use this type of lights for studio lighting. Some work lights are also attached to heavy vehicles like tractors, trucks and off-road vehicles. A good example is the use of certain work lights with vehicles to aid in reversing, especially at night. Some work lights are also used as marine lights underwater.
