LED tunnel lights are currently preferred to light tunnels. They feature long working lifetime, good stability and high lighting efficiency. The fast development of world traffic has led to the increase in demand of tunnels. This has directly led to an increase in demand of LED tunnel lights due to their safety and energy saving qualities.
Most LED lights of this nature are constructed using highly reliable, environment friendly materials such as casings made from stainless steel. The transparent area is made from strengthened glass making the lamp dust and water proof. Their construction allows them to work well in damp or high temperature environments. There are three major types of LED tunnel lights used in the world today.
Major types
28W tunnel light – provides 2,900lm flux, and comes with an innovative design and accessories.
56W tunnel light – is the average light used in most tunnels. Most products with this power rating offer 7,200lm flux. The manufacturers also provide installation services when possible.
112W tunnel light – comes with various color options such as pure white, cool white and warm white. It provides 11,000lm flux and has passed the CE/RoHS test.
Characteristics
Although they may vary from one manufacturer to another, LED tunnel lights have some similar characteristics. To start with, they have a power efficiency of 85% or more. This means they use 85% less power than ordinary lights. Secondly, their beam angle has a vertical axis of 90˚ and a horizontal axis of 100˚. Light distribution is done using a beam / curve pattern, and they require an input voltage of AC 85 – 264V / 277V. Lastly, their lifespan is about 50,000 hours.
Advanced materials, technologies and lighting sources have been adopted in the manufacture of LED tunnel lights. It is important for manufacturers to use such measures since tunnel lighting is not similar to normal road lighting. For instance, bad environmental conditions such as vibration, noise and vehicle exhaust fumes will affect tunnel lighting. With this in mind, manufacturers of tunnel lights have to go an extra mile to discuss the design in order to come up with the best tunnel lighting system that will create a safe environment for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers.
One of the best LED lights used for tunnels is those that have achieved 114 – 1,221m/W. When an electrical voltage of 3.2V is available, the power supply of an LED tunnel light of this kind will still receive 320hA. This means the power used is 1.024W. In a project that uses 56 such lights, the total power is about 60W. When the same calculations are done using normal bulbs, the difference is marginally higher.
For example, if the total length of a straight tunnel is 736 meters, a tunnel using LED lights will be divided into three illumination areas (according to the HPS installation plans). The high bright area is the distance from the entrance to 30 meters inwards. Illumination for this area is 80Lux. 30 meters to 60 meters inwards is known as the medium bright area standing at 50Lux. 60 to 96 meters inwards is referred to as the transition area with an illumination of 40 Lux. The middle of the tunnel is the low bright area with 30 Lux illumination. During the night, light disappears making the whole tunnel a low bright area standing at 30Lux.
When LED tunnel lights are used in such a scenario, 103 pieces will be required for the whole system. 40 pieces each will be used at both ends of the tunnel. They will be controlled intelligently so as to ensure they adjust their brightness according to the amount of light available. The remaining 63 pieces will be used in the middle, and they will remain operational for 24 hours a day, every day. This is just an example of how LED tunnel lights have proven to be effective in most tunnel lighting projects.
It is, however, advised to consult with a leading LED tunnel light manufacturer before making a decision. Consultation will ensure the project is successful by creation of a design that will use the least number of lights for the best lighting effect. It is also prudent to keep in mind that a tunnel’s design will have an impact on the lighting it requires since not all tunnels are straight. Special tunnel lights can also be designed to meet the requirements that a clients has. Location does not really matter as most manufacturers can deliver to most countries in the world.
