LED Street Lights

An LED street light, also known as LED roadway lighting in some parts of the world, is a light emitting diode (LED) light fixture that is integrated, and used to light streets / roads. LED street lights are the current trend in lighting most streets and roads in developed and developing countries.

Unlike traditional street lights, the light source of these lights is LEDs. They are normally referred to as integrated lights simply because their fixture and luminaries are a single part. During the manufacturing process, sealing of the LED light cluster is done on a panel before assembly to the LED panel is done. Sealing (the step that makes it an integrated system) is done using a heat sink.

There are many designs that have been created which incorporate various LED types into a light fixture. The most current trend is using 1 watt high powered LEDs. Although this is the case, some companies are still using low powered LEDs in their products. There are some manufacturers who have even packed together low power LEDs to carry out the same function as a single high powered LED. The shape of such street lights is determined by several factors with those with the most impact being aesthetic design preferred, heat sink used and LED configuration.

Heat sinks used in the manufacturer of all LED street lights have a similar design to those used to cool electronic devices such as amplifiers and computers. To assist hot air flow away from the LEDs, heat sinks have as many grooves as possible. All LED street lights’ lifespan is directly affected by the region of heat exchange on their heat sink. Compared to their original design specification, the lifespan of most current LED based street lights is determined by their light output. A street light of this nature can be considered to be towards its end once its brightness has decreased by 30 percent.

A large number of these lights possess a lens on their LED panel. The lens has been designed with the intention of casting light it provides in a rectangular pattern. When compared to any common traditional street lights, this is an advantage since traditional lights use a reflector on the backside of a high pressure sodium lamp. With such a scenario, a substantial amount of light is normally lost, and there is production light pollution not only in the air, but also the surrounding environment. Street lights of this nature can be dangerous as they can cause a blinding glare to drivers and pedestrians.

The only drawback seen in LED focus panels is that a large part of the light is directed to the road leaving little for other areas like footpaths. The drawback can be effectively addressed by use of adjustable mounting spigots and specialized lens designs.

The major attraction of LED street lights is energy efficiency when compared to other street lighting technologies such as MH (Metal Halide) and HPS (high pressure sodium). Researchers are constantly looking for ways that they improve efficiency of upcoming models of LED lights. A good example is a product that was created by LSGC (Lighting Science Group Corporation). One of the models the group has produced is does not only possess 60% more efficiency than previous models, but it also has a lifespan of a dozen years.

LED street lights that are based on a 90-100lmW output LED can usually produce higher or similar amount of luminance as traditional lights. At the same time, they will require half the power consumption of traditional lights. Furthermore, LED lighting typically does not fail in similar fashion as normal lighting. Instead, it decreases in output to the point that it is ineffective and replacement has to be done.

Since LED street light fixtures as a rule produce less watt illumination (also known as lumen), it is important to include a well distribution illumination pattern. This will ensure the same lighting effect seen in higher lumen conventional fixtures is achieved. A good design for all LED street lights is pointing different LEDs in a single fixture to varying target points. Contractors / consumers who have their own preferences can discuss them with manufacturing companies. Most, if not all, have a way to create user specified products.
